Russia ‘wipes out’ hotel in drone attack on Ukraine

Russia launched a significant wave of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine overnight, resulting in four deaths and the destruction of a hotel.

Air defense systems were activated multiple times during the night, including in Kyiv, where Reuters witnesses reported hearing at least three rounds of explosions.

In the central city of Kryvyi Rih, two people lost their lives when a hotel was destroyed, according to Serhiy Lisak, the governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region, where the city is located.

In another incident, two more people were killed in drone attacks on Zaporizhzhia in southeastern Ukraine.

These attacks follow a deadly assault from Sunday night into Monday, which Russia called its "biggest air attack" of the war, killing seven people. Among the victims was Ryan Evans, a British safety advisor for Reuters, who was found dead after the Hotel Sapfir in Kramatorsk was hit.

Meanwhile, the governor of Russia’s Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, reported that the situation on the border with Ukraine remains "difficult, but under control."

Gladkov stated that there were attempts by Ukrainian forces to breach the border in the Belgorod region on Tuesday. "Our military is conducting planned operations. Please stay calm and rely only on official sources of information," he urged.

Russian authorities reported that around 500 Ukrainian troops attacked two checkpoints at Nekhoteyevka and Shebekino in the southern Belgorod region, which borders Kursk.

In the neighboring Kursk region, Ukrainian forces launched an offensive on August 6, seizing more than 1,150 square kilometers of land.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has vowed to respond after Russian missile strikes hit Ukraine for the second consecutive night. Zelensky confirmed that rescue operations are ongoing following the latest attacks, which killed four people and injured 16 others.

"We will undoubtedly respond to Russia for this and all other attacks. Crimes against humanity cannot go unpunished," Zelensky stated.

Rescue efforts are continuing in the regions targeted by Russia overnight.
