Ukraine has unveiled a new domestically-produced weapon system, marking a significant development in its ongoing conflict with Russia. This new system, named the Palyanytsia, was used in combat for the first time on Ukraine's Independence Day, as confirmed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a celebratory speech.
The Palyanytsia derives its name from a traditional Ukrainian bread, which has gained symbolic importance since the war began. The word has been used as a shibboleth to distinguish Ukrainians from Russians, as the pronunciation varies between the two groups. Zelenskyy emphasized that this new weapon represents a novel method of retaliation against the aggressor, highlighting Ukraine’s determination to defend itself with homegrown technologies.
For months, Ukrainian officials have been advocating for Western defense companies to collaborate on producing advanced arms within the country.
