Dick Cheney: My Vote Goes to Kamala Harris

Former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, a lifelong Republican, has publicly declared his support for Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election. His daughter, Liz Cheney, announced this endorsement during an onstage interview at the Texas Tribune festival in Austin, Texas. Liz Cheney had already voiced her support for Harris, aligning with her father in their opposition to former President Donald Trump.

Dick Cheney, who served as Vice President under George W. Bush, has been a vocal critic of Trump, particularly since the 2022 election cycle. During Liz Cheney’s unsuccessful bid for re-election to Wyoming's lone congressional seat in 2022, her father strongly denounced Trump. In his recent statement, Cheney said, “He can never be trusted with power again,” underscoring his deep concerns about Trump’s leadership and actions during his presidency.

The Cheneys’ opposition to Trump began after Liz Cheney criticized his foreign policy and later his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. The breaking point came when Trump’s influence contributed to Liz Cheney's loss in the 2022 Republican primary to Harriet Hageman, a Trump-endorsed candidate.

Despite their lifelong affiliation with the Republican Party, both Cheneys have found common ground with Democrats in recent years, particularly in their stance against Trump. However, this marks the first time Dick Cheney has endorsed a Democratic candidate for president. In his statement, he emphasized the need to put the country above the party, saying, “As citizens, we each must put the country above partisanship to defend our Constitution.”

Trump responded to the endorsement by dismissing the Cheneys as “irrelevant RINOs” (Republicans in Name Only), a term he often uses for Republicans who oppose him. A Trump spokesperson sarcastically questioned, “Who is Liz Cheney?” in response to the endorsement. Meanwhile, the Harris campaign praised the Cheneys for joining “a growing movement of Republicans putting country over party.”

Dick Cheney’s public appearances have been rare in recent years due to his health, including a heart transplant in 2012. Both Cheneys supported Trump in 2016, but their relationship soured after Trump criticized the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, which were initiated during Cheney's tenure as Vice President.
