New York Magazine reporter on leave over relationship with RFK Jr.

New York Magazine announced Thursday that its star reporter, Olivia Nuzzi, has been placed on leave after revealing a personal relationship with a former subject of her reporting. The magazine stated that Nuzzi, who was covering Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s presidential campaign, had failed to disclose this relationship, which violated its guidelines on transparency regarding potential conflicts of interest.

In a statement, New York Magazine noted, "Had we known about this relationship, she would not have continued covering the campaign." Despite the issue, a review of Nuzzi's reporting found no inaccuracies or bias. The magazine further stated that Nuzzi is on leave while an independent third-party review is conducted, and expressed regret for violating the trust of its readers.

Neither Nuzzi nor the magazine identified the person involved, but outlets like Status, CNN, and The New York Times have reported it was Kennedy. Nuzzi, in a statement to The New York Times, acknowledged that some of her interactions with the subject had become personal but clarified that the relationship was never physical. She added, "I regret not disclosing this sooner, and I apologize to my colleagues and readers."

A spokesperson for Kennedy, Stefanie Spear, responded briefly, stating that Kennedy had only met Nuzzi once for an interview that resulted in a critical article. Nuzzi had written an in-depth piece on Kennedy in November 2023 titled "The Mind-Bending Politics of RFK Jr.'s Spoiler Campaign," and her most recent article, an interview with Donald Trump, was published on September 9. That piece now includes a note referencing New York Magazine's statement.

Kennedy, who rose to prominence as an environmental lawyer and anti-vaccine advocate, ended his presidential run last month and endorsed Trump.
