UK to send hundreds of missiles to Ukraine; Russia fires more than 40 drones overnight

The Ukrainian air force reported that it successfully intercepted 27 of the 44 drones launched by Russia during the night. In addition, UK Defence Secretary John Healey is preparing to reveal that the UK will provide 650 missiles to Ukraine as part of a £162 million commitment.

Russian attacks on Ukraine overnight sparked fires and injured at least five people across the country, local authorities reported this morning.

In the Lviv region, debris from drones fell in an industrial area, igniting four trucks. By morning, 32 firefighters had extinguished the blaze, and the governor confirmed there were no injuries during the attack.

Images released this morning show fire crews dousing flames at a warehouse facility hit by a Russian drone strike in the village of Murovane, Lviv region. Ukraine’s air force reported shooting down 27 of 44 Russian-launched drones overnight.

Russia also launched two missiles in the assault, according to the Air Force via a Telegram statement.

Both Ukraine and Russia have increasingly relied on drones throughout the war, sending them across each other’s borders. In recent months, the frequency of these drone incursions has increased significantly.

In addition to this news, following the appointment of a new top diplomat by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, here's what we know...

Ukraine's parliament has approved Andrii Sybiha as the new foreign minister, replacing Dmytro Kuleba. Sybiha, a former ambassador to Turkey, has served as Kuleba’s deputy since April. Kuleba had become a prominent figure internationally, advocating for Western support during the war. Zelenskyy’s government reshuffle is expected to replace nearly a dozen key officials as Ukraine enters what could be a critical phase of the war, now in its 900th day.

Looking ahead, a challenging winter will likely test the nation’s resilience.

In further developments, the UK is preparing to send 650 missiles to Ukraine as part of a £162 million defense commitment. Defense Secretary John Healey is expected to make the announcement today at a summit of European defense ministers held at the U.S. Air Force base in Ramstein, Germany.

This marks Healey’s first appearance at the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, where he will reaffirm the UK’s continued support for Ukraine.

Ahead of the summit, Healey stated, "This new commitment will provide a crucial boost to Ukraine’s air defenses and reflects our new government's resolve to increase support for Ukraine."

He further noted, "Recent Russian strikes on Poltava and Lviv have shown the tragic cost of these indiscriminate attacks. These UK-made missiles will help Ukraine defend its people, infrastructure, and territory from Putin’s brutal assaults. Today, with our international partners, we will demonstrate our united stance for Ukraine and discuss how best to enhance our assistance. The security of the UK and Europe begins in Ukraine."

To add context: The 650 lightweight multirole missile (LLM) systems are expected to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses and will be delivered by the end of the year. The UK has previously sent hundreds of LLMs to Ukraine, and this new order is part of a broader initiative to ramp up European defense production in support of Ukraine’s war effort.
