Boris Johnson has posited that had Donald Trump remained in office, Vladimir Putin would not have dared to initiate his so-called "special military operation" against Ukraine, and this assertion holds merit. During his presidency, one of Trump's defining traits was his unpredictability, particularly regarding global security threats.
This uncertainty surrounding his responses to challenges posed by Iranian-backed terrorists or authoritarian regimes like Russia and China functioned as a unique form of deterrent. By leaving adversaries unsure of his true intentions, Trump effectively thwarted potential global conflicts.
In contrast to the Biden administration's disappointing track record, Trump's presidency can be viewed as a relative success. Under his leadership, the brutal regime of the Islamic State was dismantled, thanks in part to the removal of restrictions on the US-led coalition’s rules of engagement imposed by the previous Obama administration.
Trump was also proactive in countering authoritarian regimes in Moscow and Beijing, openly condemning their efforts to undermine the Western alliance, particularly regarding attempts to interfere with critical infrastructure. For example, Trump’s administration curtailed China's deceptive involvement in the UK’s 5G telecommunications network by exposing its true intentions.
Furthermore, Trump's decisive action against Iran significantly curtailed its destabilizing activities in the Middle East. This was exemplified by his authorization of the drone strike that killed Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Revolutionary Guard's Quds Force. In stark contrast, President Biden will exit the White House with two significant global conflicts erupting during his tenure: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and the violent assault on Israel by Iranian-backed Hamas terrorists on October 7.
Biden's administration has been plagued by incompetence, contributing to these crises. For instance, Putin's decision to invade Ukraine closely followed Biden's chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan. Moreover, Iran's financial support for Hamas was likely bolstered by the billions of dollars in frozen assets released by the Biden administration in an attempt to negotiate a new nuclear deal.
If Biden’s perceived weakness has emboldened global miscreants to pursue their aims through violence, they would likely reconsider their options should Trump return to the White House. Although Trump may express reservations about sustaining current levels of support for Ukraine, he would never accept the current US policy of providing military aid while simultaneously restricting its use by the Ukrainians.
Should Trump succeed in his bid for a second term, tyrants from Moscow to Tehran and Beijing to Pyongyang would think twice before resorting to violent measures to achieve their goals.
