Liz Cheney Responds to Donald Trump Saying Guns Should Be Fired at Her

Liz Cheney sharply criticized Donald Trump, calling him a "cruel, unstable man" following his comment that she should have “guns trained on her face.” She stated, "This is how dictators destroy free nations. They threaten those who speak against them with death. We cannot entrust our country and freedom to a petty, vindictive, cruel, unstable man who wants to be a tyrant."

At a recent event, Trump labeled Cheney as a "war hawk," questioning her commitment to sending troops into combat. In a conversation with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson in Glendale, Arizona, Trump said, “She’s a radical war hawk. Let’s put her with the rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her. OK, let’s see how she feels about it.

You know, when the guns are trained on her face.” Trump implied that Cheney would have the United States involved in conflicts in “50 different countries.” He framed his remarks as a criticism of politicians who advocate for military intervention from the safety of Washington, D.C.

Trump has repeatedly attacked Cheney, previously suggesting that she should "go to jail." Meanwhile, Cheney has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election, joining her at three recent events in battleground states. She encouraged anti-Trump Republicans to support Harris, calling Trump a threat to democracy. Her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, has also endorsed Harris, stating that Trump is the “greatest threat” to the republic in U.S. history.

At Thursday’s event, Trump responded to Dick Cheney’s support for his daughter, saying, “I don’t blame him for sticking with his daughter, but his daughter’s a very dumb individual.” Liz Cheney became one of Trump’s harshest critics after the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, for which she blamed him. She was one of only two Republicans on the House Select Committee investigating the Capitol riot and voted to impeach Trump.

After serving as Wyoming’s representative since 2016, she lost her seat in 2022 to a pro-Trump candidate. Cheney joins other prominent Republicans, including several former officials, in publicly condemning the former president.
