On November 23, Russian Colonel-General Gennadiy Anashkin was reportedly dismissed from his role as commander of the “South” military unit. According to Russian media outlet Mash, Anashkin is accused of concealing critical information about the front-line situation in Ukraine, particularly in the Siversk direction.

While Russia has not officially confirmed his dismissal, Russian military correspondents have circulated the news widely. Online commentators claim that Anashkin was suspected of deliberately withholding the true state of affairs on the battlefield from his superiors. Reports suggest that units under the "South" military group were actively engaged in combat near Siversk, a detail allegedly obscured by the general.

Earlier this month, videos shared on social media depicted columns of Russian military equipment sustaining significant losses in the Siversk sector, intensifying scrutiny of the command's effectiveness. Anashkin’s failure to report accurately may have compounded existing frustrations within the Russian military leadership.

Colonel-General Anashkin's military career includes notable roles, such as commanding Russian forces in Nagorno-Karabakh from September 2021 to January 2022. In May 2023, he was appointed interim commander of the Southern Military District of the Russian Federation.

This dismissal comes amid broader turbulence within Russia’s military leadership. Earlier this year, President Vladimir Putin replaced the Minister of Defense, appointing Andrey Belousov to succeed Sergei Shoigu. Shoigu, in turn, transitioned to a new role as Secretary of the Russian Security Council.

Additionally, Russia has seen high-profile investigations targeting senior defense officials. Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov was detained on corruption charges, with speculation suggesting he might face accusations of treason. Another former deputy under Shoigu also found himself in pre-trial detention on similar allegations.

These developments reflect mounting internal pressures and growing discontent within Russia’s military and political hierarchy. Ongoing challenges on the battlefield, coupled with allegations of corruption and inefficiency, have strained the Kremlin’s ability to project stability. The recent dismissal of Anashkin underscores the broader challenges facing Russia as it struggles to manage both its military operations and internal leadership crises.
