On November 23, Russian Colonel-General Gennadiy Anashkin was reportedly dismissed from his role as commander of the “South” military unit. Online commentators claim that Anashkin was suspected of deliberately withholding the true state of affairs on the battlefield from his superiors. Reports suggest that units under the "South" military group were actively engaged in combat near Siversk, a detail allegedly obscured by the general.
Earlier this month, videos shared on social media depicted columns of Russian military equipment sustaining significant losses in the Siversk sector, intensifying scrutiny of the command's effectiveness. Colonel-General Anashkin's military career includes notable roles, such as commanding Russian forces in Nagorno-Karabakh from September 2021 to January 2022. In May 2023, he was appointed interim commander of the Southern Military District of the Russian Federation.

Earlier this year, President Vladimir Putin replaced the Minister of Defense, appointing Andrey Belousov to succeed Sergei Shoigu.
