Russian losses in tanks, armored patrol vehicles (APVs), and other military equipment are escalating rapidly as the war in Ukraine enters its 986th day, according to the latest report from Kyiv.
On Thursday, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense shared updates on X (formerly Twitter), revealing that since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, Moscow has lost nearly 10,000 tanks, close to 20,000 APVs, and almost 30,000 vehicles and fuel tanks.
Over the past week alone, Russia suffered the loss of 10,660 soldiers, 87 tanks, 179 APVs, and 453 vehicles and fuel tanks, as reported by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
As these grim milestones continue to mount, Russian President Vladimir Putin has sought ways to replenish lost personnel and equipment. Newsweek reached out to both the Ukrainian and Russian Ministries of Defense for comments via email.
On November 7, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reported that Russia had lost 10 tanks, 20 APVs, and 78 vehicles and fuel tanks in a single day. These losses have contributed to overall totals of 9,224 tanks, 18,612 APVs, and 28,411 vehicles and fuel tanks. Additionally, the report highlighted the loss of 1,400 Russian soldiers, 24 artillery systems, 42 drones, and 8 units of specialized equipment.
The Ministry of Defense’s post on X included a quote from American author H. Jackson Brown: "You either make dust or eat dust," about Russia's deteriorating position.
The loss of tanks has seen a significant increase since May, particularly following a sharp rise in October of the previous year. Likewise, losses of APVs spiked in both May and October of this year, setting new records.
The most dramatic losses have been in vehicles and fuel tanks, which have surged exponentially since March 2023.
On October 25, Russia recorded its third-largest single-day loss of personnel, with 1,630 soldiers killed, while losses of military equipment hit new heights on November 5.
