Russia Responds to Hunter Biden Pardon: 'Caricature of Democracy'

Russia has criticized President Joe Biden's decision to pardon his son, Hunter, who was facing sentencing on federal felony charges related to gun possession and tax violations. The move marks a reversal of Biden's earlier stance, where he had stated that he would not intervene in his son's legal matters.

On Sunday, the president issued a "full and unconditional" pardon for Hunter Biden, according to a White House statement. *Newsweek* has reached out to the White House for additional comment.

Russian foreign affairs spokesperson Maria Zakharova condemned the pardon, calling it a reflection of the U.S. being "a caricature of democracy" in an interview with the pro-Kremlin newspaper *Izvestia*. Additionally, Kremlin propagandist Olga Skabeyeva, host of *60 Minutes*, shared her view on Telegram, sarcastically stating, "Biden has pardoned his son Hunter, according to the White House. Democracy."

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump expressed outrage on Truth Social, comparing the pardon to the continued imprisonment of individuals convicted in connection with the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. He asked, "Does the Pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the J-6 Hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years? Such an abuse and miscarriage of Justice!"

Other Republicans, including Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and James Comer (R-KY), who chairs the House Oversight Committee, as well as Senator John Barrasso (R-WY), also denounced the decision.

In response, Hunter Biden's legal team issued a report warning that he may face retribution from Trump upon the latter's potential return to the White House in January 2025. The report highlights that Trump has publicly mentioned Hunter as part of his "enemies list," raising concerns about the possibility of future legal challenges or retaliation.
