President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly reconsidering his nomination of Pete Hegseth for Secretary of Defense and is contemplating replacing him with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, according to The Wall Street Journal. The report, citing sources familiar with the discussions, indicates that Hegseth’s nomination has encountered significant hurdles on Capitol Hill due to allegations related to his personal and professional conduct. These concerns have led Trump’s allies to doubt Hegseth’s ability to withstand further scrutiny.
Hegseth, a combat veteran and former Fox News host, requires Senate Republican support to secure confirmation. However, the increasing controversies surrounding him have cast doubt on the viability of his nomination. Neither the Trump transition team nor DeSantis’ office responded immediately to requests for comment.
This potential shake-up comes amid other challenges for Trump’s transition team, as two previous nominees for senior roles have already withdrawn. On Tuesday, Chad Chronister removed himself from consideration to lead the Drug Enforcement Administration.
This follows former Representative Matt Gaetz’s earlier withdrawal from consideration for Attorney General, after facing intense scrutiny over allegations of sexual misconduct involving an underage girl.
DeSantis, who recently lost the Republican presidential nomination to Trump, had been considered for the Pentagon role earlier in the selection process before Hegseth was chosen. The Florida governor has military experience, having served in the Navy’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps from 2004 to 2010. His background and political stature could make him a strong candidate for the position if Hegseth’s nomination falters.
Despite these developments, Trump’s decision on the matter remains fluid. The Journal noted that DeSantis is one of several possible replacements under consideration should Hegseth’s nomination be withdrawn.
The shifting dynamics underscore the challenges Trump faces as he finalizes his cabinet amid heightened scrutiny of his appointees. Whether DeSantis will ultimately be nominated or another candidate emerges remains uncertain. For now, Trump’s team must address the mounting concerns over Hegseth’s viability and secure Senate support for whoever takes the helm at the Department of Defense.
